Distance

Alexis Zavialoff, Distance
Softcover, 48 pp., offset 4/4, 18 x 14 cm
Edition of 1000
Published by Nieves

$22.00 ·

The body of work presented in Distance comes from 3 weeks Zavialoff spent traveling in and out of Moscow’s (Russia) surroundings, with his tiny Pentax auto 110 format camera, going from big metropolitan life to getting lost in the woods, meeting genuine people on the way and staying at their houses, documenting life in front of his eyes. Distance is not just the extent he traveled to shoot these beautiful images, it’s also a sense of both misplace between his Russian heritage and French upbringing, combined with the width and immensity of a country like Russia.

Humans Manifesto.
No plan survives first contact with the enemy.
Sometimes being dumb is the only smart alternative.
Shy people are secretly egoists. Nothing is real.
Everything you see is a dream you project onto the
world. Children live out their parents unconscious.
The only animals that suffer from anxiety are the
ones that associate with humans. I don’t trust
people who are very articulate. The only way to be
sane is to embrace your insanity. When you feel
guilty about being sad, remember Walt Disney
was a manic depressive. Everything I said
could be totally wrong.

“As a graphic artist, you’re sort of swimming in a void. It’s really simple to make cool stuff, there’s so much cool stuff going round day in day out that it’s getting boring.” Geoff McFetridge sees himself as a merchant in icons. “Take the Yeti. I’ve made dozens of them over the years. In fact, I have reduced the bigfoot to virtually nothing. Even so, no matter how I keep reducing the image, it remains recognizable. That’s how I attract people; then I give it all a twist and start playing the perception game.

North Lake Shore Drive

Wesley Willis (Chicago, 1963–2003) began his artistic career singing on the street, accompanied by his Technics KN 2000 keyboard. He was soon playing opening slots for local bands, and later recording songs as an homage to these performances (i.e. “Urge Overkill”, “Swervedriver”, “Foo Fighters”, “The Frogs”). In 1989, Willis was diagnosed as schizophrenic; he explains that writing, performing, and recording help quiet the voices in his head. Most of his exposure came as an internet phenomenon during the early days of peer-to-peer file sharing.

Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen is the first institution to present an extensive show of Willis’ artwork, focusing on its fascination for Chicago’s architecture and the throbbing activity of the Midwest metropolis: the characteristic skyline, the lakeside, the freeways as well as the uniform fast food chains. His interest for urban sceneries came from it being his natural habitat, which was then translated into thousands of magnificently detailed ballpoint/felt-tip renderings of the city and riding around on the bus. North Lake Shore Drive has been edited by Urs Lehni and Linus Bill of Our Magazine.

Other Scenes at Roberts & Tilton presents an eclectic group of emerging and established artists all of whom share disturbing yet romantic visions, such as Rita Ackermann, Gusmano Cesaretti, Daido Moriyama, Daniel Higgs, Becca Mann, Ryan McGinley, Jockum Nordström, Raymond Pettibon and Gee Vaucher. In these artist’s works, a discreet form of protest exists; a desire to find love amongst the ruins, beauty in the shadows. The works included in the exhibition span from 1974 to the present, including many works created specifically for this exhibition.

Other Scenes, the catalog published on the occasion by Nieves, includes selected images from the works on display, some of which have been pulled from archives that have not been accessed for over twenty years. This is the third collaboration between Nieves and Aaron Rose, an independent curator currently living in Los Angeles.
