Always and Never

Ari Marcopoulos, Always and Never
Softcover, 20 pp., offset 4/1, 19.5 x 25.5 cm
Edition of 500

$16.00 ·

Always and Never is a one-off title by Ari Marcopolous combining old and new photographs in a unique body of work, thought to create a larger picture of Marcopoulos’ work. “For every photograph that has been presented, there are hundreds more that he has not yet found the right moment to introduce. Timing is not just in relation to taking the shot, but also to its public exposure.” states curator Kate Fowle in her text for the 2006 Flow exhibition catalog. Marcopoulos’s work is often talked about in the context of his engagement with subcultures (skateboarding, art, music). Non-descript skies, anonymous television footage, and unpopulated landscapes counter the action of extreme sports, the stage, or the street, for which he is most known for. The book is published on occasion of the exhibition Always and Never at Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan.

Bad Couples

“The book consists of a series of repeated gestures, often neglected and/or obliterated. Hastily drawn expressionistic heads and faces inspired by grotesques, caricatures, cosmic characters, urban nowheres, classical sculptures, and personal experience. Also there are a couple of abstracts obtusely rendered with marker pen, which integrate in the open narrative structure. The aim is to create psychedelic melancholia. I try to keep a balance between the crudely drawn and the more soft stuff, like being on an abandoned traffic island surrounded by lush vegetation.”

An early progenitor of the artist’s book genre, Warja Honegger-Lavater was born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1913. She worked as an illustrator for the magazine Jeunesse from 1944-1958, and moved to New York shortly thereafter where she began a wonderful series of artist’s books.

These books were published between 1962 and 1971, an exceptionally ripe time for artists to turn to the bookform, a time when the most often cited “first” artist’s book also appeared, Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1962) by Ed Ruscha.

David Chieppo, an old dirt trail, a dead oak tree, a big rock on a hill
Softcover, 80 pp., offset 4/4, 19.5 x 25.5 cm
Edition of 500

$32.00 ·

David Chieppo, born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1973 and based in Zurich since 1998, is an artist whose drawings are fundamental to his work, for they have an openness and compositional spontaneity that relates closely to the way the world is seen. In capturing a moment, the drawings are not determined primarily by stylistic concerns, but by the potent energy of the person or situation Chieppo seeks to convey — irrespective of whether these phenomena are experienced at first hand or through a medium such as photography, film or television. Chieppo can portray a scene with ostensible naivety while at the same time delivering a subtext that lends it a dramatic twist. By the same token, emotionally charged scenes are presented as though they were being reported with a childlike lack of understanding. Situations are not translated, but rendered literally; the artist provides no commentary, but lets the image speak for itself.

“Some things that may or may not relate to these drawings: A professional suggested I take anti-depressants. I declined. About the same time I started drawing fireworks. I didn’t know what they meant or why I was drawing them. I was confused and embarrassed by this lack of meaning, but they kept coming. I could draw them no matter how I felt. I read that fireworks were first used in China in the 12th century to scare away negative spirits. I envied a world that not only recognized spirits, but scared the negative ones away with small man made explosions. About the same time, I read in a magazine that antidepressants have a hard time performing better than the placebo pills they are tested against. Scientist cannot explain it, but almost as many people who take the fake pills say they feel relief from their depression. The blood flow in their brains actually changes in the same positive way that it does for the people who take the real pills. I felt a connection between the Chinese fireworks and the placebo effect, and some relief in all the things we don’t understand. At some point the fireworks grew more and more abstract, and messy, and complicated, and I became if not content then at least willing to make things that didn’t have any apparent meaning.”

For Death Jukebox a clairvoyant was employed to contact ten people who were associated with the music industry to find out each of their current top ten albums. The information received from the clairvoyant, Steve, forms the content of this booklet.

Andrea Heller and Paul Harper reproduced the original data Steve sent to tem via email. These contain interesting additional comments and inconsistencies, either from Steve or from the rock star he was in contact with at the time. On the following pages are the refined top ten lists with additional information including track listing, catalogue number and original release date. Heller and Harper worked on the assumption that the order the albums have been sent to them by the clairvoyant is the correct running order from 1 to 10.
